The training will include:

  • First-hand accounts from public officials (both elected, and staff) about how they built coalitions to successfully achieve policy change at the state and local levels, and the lessons they learned along the way.
  • A lunch panel with community, faith and advocacy leaders about how public officials can get the most out of relationships with constituents, experts and community groups.
  • An interactive media training on how to work with the press, and on social media.
  • A candid panel conversation with elected officials on the mistakes they made and lessons they learned.

Running for office takes courage, and West Virginia is a state that is in need of courageous leadership on behalf of our children and families.

This nonpartisan training is organized by the WV Candidate Training Academy – a coalition led by the Our Children, Our Future Campaign in partnership with The West Virginia Community Development Hub, Generation WV, the WV Chamber of Commerce Executives, the WV AFL-CIO, the Secretary of State’s Office, the WV Municipal League, the WV Association of Counties, the WV County Commissioners Association, WV Citizen Action Group, and other organizations.

Speakers will include Del. Sean Hornbuckle, County Commissioners Greg Puckett and Gabe Roush, City Councilor Karan Ireland and Board of Education member Ric Cavender.

In the fall of 2015, the WV Candidate Training Academy was formed and held its first 4 candidate trainings.

We trained 108 people who came from every party. Of that group, 36 went on to run for office this year, and 23 won either their primary or general election.
